Η Annette Berlin των Shoun Shoun έδωσε μια αποκλειστική συνέντευξη στον Τάκη Κρεμμυδιώτη, στην οποία μετείχαν και τα λοιπά τρία μέλη της μπάντας, αμέσως μετά τις απαραίτητες συστάσεις.

 

Παρακαλώ, μπορείς να μου πεις εν συντομία τη μουσική σου πορεία, αρχίζοντας από την Praise the Loud μέχρι τους Shoun Shoun;

Η Praise the Loud είναι μια μικρή DIY δισκογραφική εταιρεία με έδρα το Bristol. Ο Shawn, ιδιοκτήτης της εταιρείας, έχει συμμετάσχει στην ηχογράφηση της μουσικής της προηγούμενης μπάντας μου των Annette Berlin, όπως και πρόσφατα έχει ηχογραφήσει πέντε τραγούδια των Shoun Shoun. Κάποτε ο Chuck D των Public Enemy έπεσε πάνω στη σελίδα της εταιρείας στο twitter και αποφάσισε να δώσει την ονομασία της για τίτλο σε ένα τραγούδι του, πράγμα που νομίζω πως ήταν πολύ καλό. Πριν τους Shoun Shoun τραγουδούσα για σχεδόν δεκαπέντε χρόνια σε ένα συγκρότημα πουλεγόταν Big Joan, μια αντισυμβατικήκαι πειραματική noise rock μπάντα. Ο κιθαρίστας, απ’ ό,τι φαίνεται, ακουγόταν σα να σου έκανε κάποιος τατουάζ στους βολβούς των ματιών σου. Είχε πολύ πλάκα! Είχαμε προσκληθεί να ηχογραφήσουμε ένα session για τον John Peel, αλλά λόγω ενός σκοτεινού παιχνιδιού της μοίρας αυτός πέθανε πριν μπορέσουμε να τον συνατήσουμε στο στούντιο του BBC. Οι Big Joan ήταν και είναι ακόμα σαν οικογένεια. Κατά τα άλλα, έχω παίξει ντραμς για λίγα χρόνια με τη Rose Kemp, στους Male and the She Creatures.

 

Πότε αποφάσισες να σχηματίσεις τους Shoun Shoun;

Οι Shoun Shoun γεννήθηκαν πριν τρία χρόνια. Ο λόγος; Να κάνω κάτι καινούργιο, να διακόψω τις παλιές συνήθειες, για να δω τι μπορεί να συμβεί.

 

Παρατηρώ ότι άλλες φορές το όνομα της μπάντας γράφεται με umlaut και άλλες όχι. Ποια από τις δύο είναι η σωστή γραφή και, επί τη ευκαιρία, ποιου ήταν η ιδέα και τι αντιπροσωπεύει για εσένα;

Ναι, έχω πειραματιστεί με την αναγραφή του ονόματος. Στην αρχή δε μπορούσα να αποφασίσω... Ο σωστός τρόπος είναι Shoun Shoun, χωρίς umlaut... Τουλάχιστον, έτσι νομίζω... Μου αρέσει όπως φαίνεται γραμμένο. Είναι ένα όνομα που δεν προδίδει το στυλ της μουσικής ή το πόσα μέλη συμμετέχουν. Επίσης, υπάρχει ένας καταπληκτικός Ιάπωνας εικονογράφος, που ονομάζεται Yamamoto Shōun.

Boris: Σα να σεχαστουκίζουν στο πρόσωπο με ζεστό νερό.

Annette: Σαν ένα μακρύ σκονισμένο δρόμο που σεο δηγεί στην πόλη.

Για να λέμε ιστορίες.

Boris: Η Cher θα ήταν η προφανής απάντηση, αλλά νομίζω πως το έχει ήδη τραγουδήσει.

Annette: Των Siouxsie and the Banshees και των Rage Against the Machine.

 

Πόσο εύκολο ή δύσκολο είναι για ένα μουσικό να ζει και να εργάζεται στο Bristol;

Ole: Δε θεώρησα ποτέ τον εαυτό μου ως μουσικό.

Amy: Πολύτέλεια, με την έννοια ότι υπάρχουν πολλοί ταλαντούχοι μουσικοί να εμπνεύσουν ο ένας τον άλλο, αλλά όχι αν το κάνεις βιοποριστικά...

Τι θυμάστε από τη συναυλία στο Grain Barge;

Ole: Πολύ καλός ήχος, πολύ καλή ενέργεια, πολλή ζέστη!

Amy: Δεν ήμουν εκεί.

Boris: Δε θυμάμαι πολλά από τη συναυλία, αλλά νομίζω πως μετά ένιωθα μια ακαθόριστη αίσθηση ευφορίας.

Annette: Χαμογελαστά πρόσωπα.

 

Ποια είναι τα σχεδιά σας για το μέλλον; Πρόκειται να κυκλοφορήσετε κάποιο EP;

Ναι, θα κάνουμε κάποιες ηχογραφήσεις αργότερα μέσα στη χρονιά. Ένα EP ή ένα single ή και τα δύο. Επίσης, θα υπάρξει και ένα μουσικό βίντεο.

Annette Berlin of Shoun Shoun gave an exclusive interview to Takis Kremmydiotis, in which the rest three of the band members took part just after they were introduced.

 

Could you please tell us in short your music story, beginning from Praise the Loud till Shoun Shoun?

Praise the Loud is a small DIY label based in Bristol. Shawn, who runs the label has been involved in recording my previous band’s Annette Berlin music and has also just recorded five Shoun Shoun tracks with us. Chuck D from Public Enemy once came across the label’s page on twitter and decided to name one of his songs after the label name, which is pretty cool I think. Before Shoun Shoun I sang for about 15 years in a band called Big Joan,an uncompromising and experimental noise rock band. The guitarist apparently sounded like someone tattooing your eyeballs. Lots of fun! We got invited to record a session with John Peel, but in a dark twist of events he died before we could come and join him in the BBC studio. Big Joan was and still is like family. Otherwise I’ve also drummed for a few years with Rose Kemp, a 2-piece called Male and The She Creatures.

 

When and how did you decide to form Shoun Shoun?

Shoun Shoun was born three years ago. The reason? Do something new, break old habits, just to see what could happen.

 

I see that the name of the band sometimes is written with umlaut and sometimes not. Which one is correct and, by the way, who’s idea was it and what does it actually represent for you?

Yeah, I’ve been experimenting with the writing of the name. I couldn’t decide at first… The correct way is ShounShoun, no Umlaut... I think... I like the way it looks written. It’s a name that doesn’t give away the style of music or how many people are involved. And there is an amazing Japanese illustrator called Yamamoto Shōun.

 

Could you please tell us what instrument each member of the band plays?

Ole Rudd - Bass

Annette Berlin – Vocals, Guitar

Amy Hag – Drums, Backing Vocals

Boris Ming – Synth, Violin

How can you describe your sound?

Ole: Personally - muddy, low-down, fundamental simplicity.

Amy: Like a full bodied fine wine.

Boris: Like being slapped round the face with a warm bath.

Annette: Like a long dusty road that takes you to the city.

 

What do you want to sing for?

To tell stories.

If you could turn back time and be a member of another band, which would you choose?

Ole: Vibra-slap on any of the peak-era Parliament/P-Funk/Funkadelic albums.

Amy: Tragic Roundabout… ha ha sorry you should ask me:). Actually, Scout Niblett.

Boris: Cher would be the obvious answer but she already tried that.

Annette:Siouxsie and the Banshees, Rage Against the Machine.

 

How easy or difficult is for a musician to live and work in Bristol?

Ole: I've never considered myself a musician.

Amy:Pretty perfect in the sense that there is so many talented people to inspire one another but not if it’s ya bread and butter…

Boris & Annette: Wot Amy said.

 

What can you recall from the Grain Barge gig?

Ole: Great sound, great energy, great heat!

Amy: I wasn’t there.

Boris: Not much from the gig but I think I had a warm fuzzy glow after.

Annette: Grinning faces.

 

What are your future plans? Are you going to release an EP?

Yes, there will be some recordings later this year. An EP, or a single, or both. And there will be a music video.
